PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

DATASET DESCRIPTION

The Wind Energy Resource Assessment Report is based on data from the CMEMS Global Ocean Wind Multi-Year Product, provided by the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS). This a bias-corrected dataset derived from the ECMWF operational model. This bias correction is a critical enhancement that ensures the dataset provides more accurate and reliable wind data for marine and renewable energy applications. Wind speeds are 10 m above surface.

- Origin: The dataset is produced using advanced numerical models and assimilates observational data from scatterometer satellites.
- Time Resolution: Hourly data.
- Temporal Coverage: 20 years of historical modelled data with a four-month data-availability lag.
- Spatial Resolution: 0.125° (~14 km), offering high spatial detail for localized assessments.
- Coverage: Global coverage, including coastal and open ocean regions, ensuring applicability across diverse marine environments.
- Methodology:  This data product is delivered by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). It a bias correction on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts' (ECMWF) operational model, which is reprocessed to assimilate data from scatterometters. Belmonte Rivas and Stoffelen (2019) compared scatterometer observations with collocated ECMWF model winds - they documented substantial systematic errors in global ECMWF fields on both small and large scales.

This dataset is widely recognized for its reliability and is applicable in scientific research, marine operations, and renewable energy assessments, etc.

METHODOLOGY

1. Data Extraction:
   - The report uses the CMEMS dataset to obtain hourly wind speed data for the specified location and time range.
2. Data Processing:
   - Wind direction and wind speed are calculated from the horizontal velocity components.

   - Wind direction is expressed in degrees in meteorological convention (the direction from which the wind is blowing).
   - The site’s energy density is calculated in Watts.
   - Statistical analyses are performed to compute wind speed monthly, quarterly, and seasonal averages and standard deviations.
   - Statistical analyses are performed to compute the site's Weibull parameters.
3. Visualization:

   - Graphs and visualizations are generated, including:
   - Wind Direction Rose: A polar plot showing the frequency distribution of wind directions.
   - Monthly, Quarterly, and Seasonal Trends: Bar charts illustrating variations in wind speed
   - Duration Curves: Graphs showing the percentage of time a specific wind speed is exceeded.
   - Histograms: Distributions of wind speeds.
4. Report Generation and Delivery:
   - The processed data and visualizations are compiled into a comprehensive PDF report, along with a CSV file containing the raw data for further analysis.
   - You will receive an email with a download link a few minutes after placing your order (contact us if you prefer a different delivery method).

USE CASES

1. Renewable Energy Development:
   - Assess the potential for wind energy generation at specific locations.
   - Identify high-energy sites before you deploy in-situ measuring devices.
   - Extrapolate data from your measuring campaign.

   - Compare locations.
2. Power Modelling:

   - Feed your power model with over 20 years of hourly data with a 4-month data-availability lag.
3. Marine Operations:
   - Plan and optimise shipping routes based on wind patterns (contact us for multiple points analysis or area maps).
   - Model and optimise fuel use for carbon compliance in shipping (contact us for multiple points with time stamps analysis).
4. Coastal and Offshore Engineering:
   - Design and evaluate coastal and offshore structures  (contact us if you need additional variables for your study).

WHY CHOOSE THIS REPORT

- High-Resolution Data: Hourly temporal resolution and ~14 km spatial resolution ensure detailed insights. Higher spatial resolution than other solutions based on MERRA-2 data.
- If you need synthetic 15-minute resolution data for your power model, let's have a chat.
- Global Coverage: Applicable to any location worldwide, from coastal areas to open oceans. Useful for floating wind analysis as other providers only offer coastal data.
- Fresh data with only a 4-month data-availability lag. Let's chat for a data refresh service when you purchase this data.
- Actionable Insights: Includes both raw data for further analysis and visualizations to support decision-making.
- Trusted Source: Based on the CMEMS dataset, a gold standard in marine data which contains a correction on the bias present in wind data derived from the ECMWF operational model.
