PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
DATASET DESCRIPTION
The Current Energy Resource Assessment Report is based on data from the CMEMS Global Ocean Physics Analysis and Forecast Product, provided by the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS). This dataset is a state-of-the-art resource for understanding ocean currents and their energy potential.
- Origin: The dataset is produced using advanced numerical models and assimilates observational data from satellites, in situ measurements, and other sources to ensure high accuracy and reliability.
- Time Resolution: Hourly data.
- Time Range: 5 years of rolling data up to the present.
- Spatial Resolution: Approximately 1/12° (~9 km), offering high spatial detail for localized assessments.
- Coverage: Global coverage, including coastal and open ocean regions, ensuring applicability across diverse marine environments.
- Methodology: The dataset is generated using the NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) model. It includes data assimilation techniques to integrate real-world observations, ensuring the highest possible accuracy.
This dataset is widely recognized for its reliability and is used in scientific research, marine operations, and renewable energy assessments.
METHODOLOGY
1. Data Extraction:
- The report uses the CMEMS dataset to obtain hourly current velocity data for the specified location and time range.
2. Data Processing:
- Current direction and total current speed are calculated from the horizontal velocity components.
- Current direction is expressed in degrees in meteorological convention (the direction from which the current is coming).
- The site’s energy density is calculated in W/m.
- Statistical analyses are performed to compute monthly, quarterly, and seasonal averages and standard deviations of energy potential.
- All statistical indicators are presented separately for the total current and the tidal‑current components.
3. Visualization:
- Graphs and visualizations are generated, including:
- Current Direction Rose: A polar plot showing the frequency distribution of current directions.
- Monthly, Quarterly, and Seasonal Trends: Bar charts illustrating variations in energy density.
- Duration Curves: Graphs showing the percentage of time a specific energy density is exceeded.
- Histograms: Distributions of energy densities derived from the current data.
4. Report Generation and Delivery:
- The processed data and visualizations are compiled into a comprehensive PDF report, along with a CSV file containing the raw data for further analysis.
- You will receive an email with a download link a few minutes after placing your order (contact us if you prefer a different delivery method).
USE CASES
1. Renewable Energy Development:
- Assess the potential for tidal and ocean current energy generation at specific locations.
- Identify high-energy sites for deploying marine energy devices.
- Compare locations.
2. Marine Operations:
- Plan and optimise shipping routes based on current patterns (contact us for multiple points analysis or area maps).
- Model and optimise fuel use for carbon compliance in shipping (contact us for multiple points with time stamps analysis).
- Plan safe and efficient offshore operations (optional inclusion of a 10-day forecast with this report).
3. Environmental Studies:
- Understand the role of ocean currents in transport studies (contact us if you need additional variables for your study).
- Study the impact of currents on marine ecosystems.
